Buying a car in Germany as an American: the honest guide
Need wheels in Germany? Here is what nobody tells you:
1. VAT form rule: if you are US military/SOFA status, you can buy a car tax-free — but ONLY through the official program or from another member. Buying a used German car privately means paying German VAT.
2. TÜV matters more than mileage: a car with fresh TÜV (inspection) is worth the premium. No TÜV = registration hassle.
3. Insurance before registration: you need an eVB number from an insurer before the Zulassungsstelle will plate the car. Get quotes online, it takes an hour.
4. Private sales on classifieds boards are normal here — meet, check the Fahrzeugbrief (title), test drive, pay cash, done.
5. Watch out: "Unfallfrei" means accident-free. If it is not in the listing, ask.
6. US-spec vs EU-spec: US-spec cars are cheaper near bases but harder to resell to Germans.
