Bürgeramt survival guide: Anmeldung, appointments, paperwork
The Bürgeramt (citizens office) is where German bureaucracy begins. Every move requires Anmeldung — address registration — within 14 days.
What you need for Anmeldung:
1. Passport or ID
2. Wohnungsgeberbestätigung — a form your landlord MUST give you confirming you moved in. No form, no registration.
3. The Anmeldung form (fill it online beforehand if your city allows)
4. Marriage/birth certificates if registering family — originals, sometimes apostilled
Pro tips:
- Book the Termin (appointment) online at midnight — new slots drop overnight
- Check other districts: a Bürgeramt across town often has earlier slots
- You need the Anmeldung certificate (Meldebescheinigung) for EVERYTHING: bank account, tax ID, phone contract, job
- Your tax ID (Steuer-ID) arrives by mail ~2 weeks after first registration
Landlord refuses the Wohnungsgeberbestätigung? That is illegal — they can be fined up to 1,000 euro. Report it.
