Kindergarten (Kita) in Germany: how to actually get a spot
Kita spots are Germany's most competitive resource — in big cities parents register BEFORE the child is born. Here is how it works:
1. Kitas accept kids from age 1 (sometimes earlier). From age 3 every child has a legal RIGHT to a spot — in practice, cities struggle to deliver.
2. Get a Kitagutschein/JonDa voucher from the Jugendamt first — this is the money ticket. Apply as early as legally possible.
3. Register at MULTIPLE kitas, not one. Waiting lists are normal; visit in person, it helps.
4. Types: public (cheap), church-run (open to all), private/bilingual (expensive but English-friendly — good option for expat families).
5. Costs: vary wildly by state — free in Berlin, 100–400 euro/month elsewhere, income-scaled.
6. Tagesmutter (daycare nanny): faster alternative when kitas are full — subsidized too.
While you wait: check local classifieds — parents share nanny arrangements, and community boards on Kapnula often have local childcare posts.
