The Girokonto is the main account: salary comes in, rent and bills go out. The card is called Girocard (formerly EC-Karte) — in small cafés it is often the only card accepted: Germany still loves cash. SEPA-Überweisung = normal European transfer, Dauerauftrag = standing order, Lastschrift = direct debit (internet, phone).
- ●Watch the account fee: 0-€ banks exist (DKB, ING, neobanks)
- ●For the account you need: passport + Anmeldung + sometimes Steuer-ID
- ●A direct debit can be reversed within 8 weeks — no questions asked
🏦 The Dispo is an overdraft — handy for 3 days, expensive for 3 months: up to 12% interest per year.
