Connectors: je…desto, um…zu, sowohl…als

B1 connected simply (weil, dass), B2 connects elegantly: "Je mehr ich übe, desto besser spreche ich" (the more I practice, the better I speak).

• ●je … desto: Je früher, desto besser.
• ●um … zu (in order to): Ich lerne, um die Prüfung zu bestehen.
• ●sowohl … als auch (both … and): Er spricht sowohl Deutsch als auch Englisch.
• ●einerseits … andererseits (on the one hand … on the other)
• ●je nachdem (depending on): Je nachdem, wie viel Zeit du hast.

Trap: um…zu only works with the SAME subject: "Ich gehe zum Kurs, um Deutsch zu lernen". Different subjects → damit: "Ich gebe dir das Buch, damit du lernst".
