Ausbildung or university: an honest comparison
Germany has 327 recognized Ausbildung trades and hundreds of degree programs. Both paths lead to careers — the difference is pace, money and ceiling.
Ausbildung is the dual system: 2–3.5 years, you work 3–4 days at a company and study 1–2 days at Berufsschule. Pay starts immediately: ~€900–1,300/month. The ceiling lifts with Meisterbrief or Techniker — salaries reach graduate level, and the Meister opens your own business (mandatory for crafts registration).
- •Ausbildung: money from day 1, practice, early career start
- •University: theory, research, access to doctor/lawyer/engineer
- •Duales Studium is the hybrid: degree + salary + experience at once
- •Duration: Ausbildung 2–3.5 years vs Bachelor 3+ years
How to choose: want a fast start and practice → Ausbildung (nursing, IT specialist, mechatronics — all shortage trades). Dream of medicine, law or research → university only. The middle path is Duales Studium: BASF, Siemens, banks pay ~€1,000–1,600 and hire you after graduation.
