After the 1918 defeat, the Weimar Republic was born — the first German democracy. It suffered crises: hyperinflation in 1923 (bread cost billions of marks) and the Great Depression. In 1933 the National Socialists took power — dictatorship, the Second World War (1939–1945) and the Holocaust followed. This trauma explains why the Basic Law states: "Human dignity is inviolable".
- ●1918–1933 — Weimar Republic: a fragile democracy
- ●1933–1945 — dictatorship: persecution, war, Holocaust
- ●1945 — surrender; Germany divided into four zones
🕊 May 8 is the Tag der Befreiung — liberation from Nazism. Remembering those years is part of the country\u2019s political culture.
