On 12 April 1961, Yuri Gagarin orbited Earth in 108 minutes aboard Vostok-1. Launch: Baikonur, speed 28,000 km/h, orbit ~300 km. Before him only dogs had flown — nobody knew if a human could survive. "Poyekhali — let\u2019s go!" he said at launch.
