Divorce goes only through court, a Trennungsjahr (separation year) is mandatory. The court decides two things: Sorgerecht (custody — usually both, exceptions for violence) and Unterhalt (support: children by table, spouse if dependent). The Zugewinnausgleich splits property: gains halved. The Versorgungsausgleich splits pensions too. Advice: family lawyer ~€500–1,000, legal aid for the poor.
