Präteritum: the written past tense

In conversation you use Perfekt ("ich habe gemacht"), but newspapers, books and official texts use Präteritum ("ich machte"). For the B1 exam you must be able to read it!

●sein → war: Ich war gestern im Bürgeramt.
●haben → hatte: Sie hatte keine Zeit.
●kommen → kam: Er kam 2015 nach Deutschland.
●gehen → ging: Wir gingen zur Schule.
●machen → machte: Er machte seine Hausaufgaben.
●geben → gab: Es gab ein Problem.

Most frequent B1 forms: war, hatte, kam, ging, machte, gab, sagte, wusste, schrieb, fand, stand, konnte, musste, wollte. Learn them as vocabulary — they appear everywhere in the exam.

Exercise: find the verbs! "Als der Mann nach Berlin kam, hatte er nur einen Koffer." — kam, hatte.
