The Steuerklasse decides how much tax leaves your salary each month. Class I = singles, III = married sole earner (cheapest), IV = both spouses work, V = second partner when III, VI = second job (most expensive). The Steuer-ID is your lifelong tax number — it arrives by post after your first Anmeldung.

●Spouses choose III/V or IV/IV — switching is allowed
●Lost your Steuer-ID? → request it again at the BZSt website
●Paid too much? → claim it back via Steuererklärung (see guide)

🧾 The average tax refund in Germany is around €1,100. A voluntary return can be filed 4 years back.
