States and municipalities: power close to you

📖 Lesson ──▶ 🎯 Quiz — pick the translation ──▶ ✅ Lesson done

The 16 Bundesländer are like 16 mini-states: own police, schools, construction, interior. Bavaria ≠ Berlin. Kommune (town/district) is the closest power: the mayor runs roads, schools, waste, building permits, Bürgeramt — your first state contacts. Landtag = state parliament, Stadtrat = town council. Want influence? Start local: less competition, more real work.

●Bürgeramt = registration, passports, permits — your first state office
●School policy differs per Land: Bavaria ≠ NRW
●Local election = most accessible level: parties seek local candidates

🏙 German mayors are directly elected — and often become federal figures: Scholz was Hamburg’s mayor, Weil Hanover’s. Municipality = politics’ launchpad.
